Driving in Hungary

The e-matrica is a digital vignette matched to your plate, bought by county or nationwide. Speed enforcement is strict — cameras generally allow only 10 km/h over the posted limit before a fine.

Tolls & vignettes

E-matrica required on motorways — digital, tied to your plate, bought online or at border kiosks.

Fine if ignored

10-day national vignette from about €15, annual from about €170 (2026, car).

County-only vignettes are cheaper if your whole route stays within one or two counties, but a nationwide sticker is simpler for a multi-day trip.

Equipment

Winter tires aren't legally required, but snow chains are mandatory on signed mountain sections — max 50 km/h while fitted.

Studded tires are banned outright, not just restricted.

Motorway 130 km/h · rural expressway 110 · rural highway 90 · built-up areas 50.

Fixed and mobile cameras generally only tolerate about 10 km/h over before issuing a fine.
