Driving in Croatia

Croatia has no vignette at all — motorways bill by distance, and 2026 replaced toll booths with a free-flow system that reads your plate, so register online before you cross the border. Winter equipment is mandatory on designated sections through the cold months.

Tolls

No vignette — motorways bill per kilometre, roughly on par with Italy's rates.

2026 replaced physical toll booths with free-flow gantries — register your plate and a payment method on hac.hr before crossing in, or pay by post afterward.

Fine if ignored

There's no barrier to stop at and pay cash on the spot anymore on converted sections.

An ENC on-board unit (from about €60) gets a 10–33% toll discount.

Worth it for a longer trip, not a one-way transit.

Equipment

Winter equipment (winter tires or chains, reflective jacket, warning triangle, first-aid kit) mandatory on winter-designated road sections Nov 15–Apr 15.

Fine if ignored

Signposted at the section boundary, not nationwide.

Dipped headlights required at night year-round, and during the day from the last Sunday of October to the last Sunday of March.
